This short poem has a short cousin which I plan to post two days from now. Here, and as usual: English followed by une version en français y una versión en español.

Couples

There was something in their looks –

In their weights, clothes, posture; a look in their eyes?

They belonged together.

And these other two, no.

And these others, further ahead, yes, after a while

The woman seemed to have learned – or, in any case, she’d ended up looking more like him.

Another had had her hair done,

Shopped for other kinds of bras,

Other scents, other towels, running shoes;

But still the gap remained.

Des couples

Il y avait quelque chose dans leur apparence –

Leur poids ? Vêtements, postures, regard ?

Ils étaient bien faits l’un pour l’autre.

Et ces deux-là, non.

Et ces deux autres, plus loin, oui, après un certain temps ;

Il semble que la femme ait appris à – ou, en tout cas, qu’elle ait fini par lui ressembler.

Une autre s’était fait coiffer,

Avait acheté un autre style de soutien-gorge,

Autres parfums, serviettes, baskets ;

Mais le fossé n’a pas disparu pour autant.

Con estos dos había algo en su aspecto…

En sus pesos, ropa, postura, ¿una mirada en sus ojos?

Estaban hechos el uno para el otro.

Y estos otros dos, no.

Y estos otros, más adelante, sí, después de un tiempo…

Por lo visto, la mujer había aprendido a -o, en cualquier caso, había terminó pareciéndose más a él.

Otra se había arreglado el pelo,

Compró otro estilo de sujetador,

Otros perfumes, toallas, zapatillas;

Pero no por ello ha desaparecido la brecha.
