Among other things, one cannot help feeling that underlying the present crisis are human beings’ struggles to come to terms with the destructiveness of their current way of life and economic system. Most do not want to make the necessary changes (though these do not seem so terrible to me), and so there is a perverse embracing of destructiveness and of destructive people. Could this be to the good long term–or be the catastrophe that humanity and the environment cannot, unfortunately, do without–insofar as the current ways do need to be radically altered?

I note this line, translated from Frederick Engels’s 1877 “Anti-Dühring” (Herrn Eugen Dührings Umwälzung der Wissenschaft):

if the whole of modern society is not to perish, a revolution in the mode of production and distribution must take place.

First thoughts from Paris after the Chief Tweet’s reelection

An image that comes to mind is of Parisians fleeing the Nazis

Taking whatever they could carry in cars lacking gas

In horse carts, horseless carts, in suitcases, on foot

In France people had come to power who welcomed the Nazis

To rid them of socialists, of empowered workers, paid vacations

And so they could take over any business owned by a Jew

And thus France lost its sovereignty (perhaps once and for all)

Young French men had to go work in German factories

The ration in France was less than 1,200 calories per day

And most of the leaders of this Putsch made out fine

Even after the Americans came in and imposed their authority, their products

Cities, farms and factories destroyed, half a million killed

The disinterest of the leaders of the current Putsch in addressing environmental problems

Will lead to many more deaths and more profound, long-lasting destruction

And who will come to impose their will amid the wreckage?

During the Second World War in occupied France, the rations for adults ages 21 to 70 provided on average around 1,080 calories a day, while an adult man needs around 2,200 calories. This shortfall resulted in malnutrition, which led to higher mortality, stunted growth, vitamin deficiency and more cases of tuberculosis and diphtheria. L’image qui me vient à l’esprit est celle des Parisiens fuyant les nazis

Emportant tout ce qu’ils pouvaient dans des voitures qui manquaient d’essence

Dans des charrettes à cheval, des charrettes sans chevaux, dans des valises, à pied

En France, des personnes sont arrivées au pouvoir qui ont souhaité la bienvenue aux nazis

Pour les débarrasser des socialistes, des travailleurs responsabilisés, des congés payés

Et de pouvoir prendre le contrôle de n’importe quelle entreprise appartenant à un juif

En Francia habían llegado al poder personas que dieron la bienvenida a los nazis

Para deshacerse de los socialistas, trabajadores empoderados y vacaciones pagadas

Y para poder hacerse cargo de cualquier negocio que pertenezca a un judío

Y así Francia perdió su soberanía (quizás de una vez por todas)

Los jóvenes franceses tuvieron que ir a trabajar a las fábricas alemanas
