There are good people and bad people

There are good people and bad people,

And what’s nice is that they’re the same

People, except of course for the few,

Obvious exceptions. Except

Exceptions are the rule!

We’re always

Nice, polite and lots of things! Except

Of course when we’re not.

Children mining coltan (for cellphones, etc.) in eastern Congo(And let’s leave out considerations of

Who makes our sneakers for a dollar

A day? Or so that we have high-tech devices

Others, including children, dig

somewhere for technical stuff.)

We’re always nice except when we’re not.

And this is something we regret. You’ll often

Find us regretting. And here’s yet another habit

We nicely share with good and bad people,

Who rarely stop to think – how? – nice it is

There’s room for both the bad and the good.

∩ I often think of Frederick Law Olmsted’s beautiful line regarding his plans for Central Park (1859): “The Park is intended to furnish healthful recreation for the poor and the rich, the young and the old, the vicious and the virtuous, so far as each can partake therein without infringing upon the rights of others and no further.” Much more diplomatic than I, he refrained from mentioning that “the vicious and the virtuous” were one and the same.

Siempre somos amables,
excepto cuando no
lo somos.
Y esto es algo que lamentamos.
¡A menudo lamentamos!
Y esto es otro
hábito que
compartimos amablemente
con las buenas
como
con las malas,
que rara vez se detienen
a pensar

— Poem(s) by William Eaton. The photograph, of child coltan miners in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2010, was added in 2026, replacing one of my own drawings, which I did not like. The photo, found online, is labeled “Courtesy: The Enough Project.” Coltan is used to manufacture tantalum capacitors which are used for mobile phones, personal computers, automotive electronics and cameras. The addition of this photo also led to the addition of phrases—”including children” & “y compris des enfants”—to the English and French versions of the poem.
