Lo que queda sin ti (What remains after you . . . sans toi)

And now for something completely different (as Monty Python once put it). A professor in Sevilla introduced me to the song Así estoy yo sin ti (This is how I am without you) by the Spanish singer-songwriter (and painter) Joaquín Sabina. The lyrics could hardly be better if you’re looking to improve your Spanish, but they are more clever than warm, more sprawling than tightly knit. I decided to try to write an alternative. The result follows—el español original, and then versions (not translations) in English et en Français.

What remains without you

A frown in the bathroom mirror
Where your eyes looked back at me.

The things you said on leaving,
Shredding memories.

The shadow of a nightgown
Its warmth, your scent now free?

The echo of your laughter
Trailing after me.

Ce qui reste sans toi

Au fond du miroir,
Personne qui sourit.

Les échos des suggestions,
Que je n’ai jamais suivies.

Nulle part ton odeur,
Ni la chemise de nuit.

Rien qu’une question :
T’avais vraiment envie ?
