It could be good that un tel poème llegara a su fin a.s.a.p.

It’s been a while since I posted one of my matter-of-fact poems (of which previous examples include They too and A poem about Ashleigh Barty). Here, as usual, the English is followed by une version en français y una versión en español. There is also a brief Notes section in English. A bit of Dreyfus, a bit of Henry James.

It could be good that such a poem comes to an end?

It was not that Dreyfus was a lone individual falsely accused and imprisoned

French society found a way to split in two

And thus to render dialogue impossible

Of course the last thing that I, an American, have in mind is how dialogue in the United States

Has been brought to a halt

I often come back to the core idea, or paradox, of Plato’s Socrates

Human beings cannot know the good

And yet the good would seem to be talking about what the good might be

Socrates was condemned to death by a vote of his neighbors

They didn’t want questions, dialogue, an unknowable good

They wished that life might be as they wished it might be

And there must those – them – who were good and right

And those others who were bad and wrong

Thinking otherwise was a capital crime

So it could be good that such a poem comes to an end – a.s.a.p.?

  • Alfred Dreyfus (1859 – 1935) was a French artillery officer of Jewish ancestry whose trial and conviction in 1894 on charges of treason became a polarizing political drama. In the end, Dreyfus was completely exonerated. Before then . . . A Royalist had written in Le Figaro, “I believe that if you opened Dreyfus’s brain you would find nothing in it that was human.” In the French chamber of deputies the Socialist leader Jean Juarès had expressed his regret that because of a clause in the law concerning political crimes, the criminal could not be shot. (Source: Roy McMullen, Degas: His Life, Times and Work (Houghton Mifflin, 1984), page 427)
  • In The Ambassadors, Henry James proposes that a Massachusetts mill town (of his imagination) “would be conscious of no requirements [that its pretty young rich girl] didn’t meet, of no question she couldn’t answer”.

Il pourrait être bon qu’un tel poème puisse s’achever ?

Ce n’est pas que Dreyfus ait été un individu isolé, accusé et emprisonné à tort

Ni qu’il était juif

La société française a trouvé un moyen de se diviser en deux

Et de rendre impossible le dialogue

Bien sûr, la dernière chose que moi, Américain, j’ai à l’esprit, c’est le fait que le dialogue aux États-Unis

Ait été stoppé

Je reviens souvent à l’idée centrale, ou au paradoxe, du Socrate de Platon

Les êtres humains ne peuvent pas connaître le bien

Et pourtant, le bien semble parler de ce que le bien pourrait être

Socrate a été condamné à mort par un vote de ses voisins

Ils ne voulaient pas de questions, de dialogue, d’un bien inconnaissable

Ils souhaitaient que la vie soit telle qu’ils la souhaitaient

Et il devait y avoir ceux – eux – qui étaient bons et justes

Et les autres qui étaient mauvais et dans l’erreur

Penser autrement était un crime capital

Il pourrait donc être bon qu’un tel poème puisse s’achever, et le plus rapidement possible ?

¿Sería una buena idea que este poema llegara a su fin?

No es que Dreyfus fuera un individuo solitario falsamente acusado y encarcelado

ni que fuera judío

La sociedad francesa encontró una manera de dividirlo en dos

y así hacer imposible el diálogo

Por supuesto, lo último que yo, estadounidense, tengo en mente es el hecho de que el diálogo en Estados Unidos

se haya detenido

Pero a menudo vuelvo a la idea central, o paradoja, del Sócrates de Platón

Los seres humanos no pueden conocer el bien

Y sin embargo, el bien parece estar hablando de lo que podría ser el bien

Sócrates fue condenado a muerte por el voto de sus vecinos

No querían preguntas, diálogo, un bien incognoscible

Deseaban que la vida fuera como ellos querían que fuera

Y debían existir aquellos -ellos- que eran buenos y correctos

Y aquellos otros que eran malos y equivocados

Pensar lo contrario era un crimen capital

Por lo tanto, ¿sería una buena idea que este poema llegara a su fin lo antes posible?
