N.B. This poem was inspired by a high-tech-ish fan and not by the French government’s authorising farmers to use the pesticide acetamiprid under exceptional circumstances. From a Guardian article: “Scientific studies have established that acetamiprid, a neonicotinoid with powerful neurotoxic effects, can poison bees”. Is this summer’s extreme heat and raging fires not enough to convince governments, and the citizenry, that preserving the Earth’s environment needs to be the top priority (to include for farmers)? One of the United States’ leading cancer research and treatment organizations reported in 2025: a “study of pesticide applicators—mostly farmers and their spouses—found they have a higher rate of certain cancers, including multiple myeloma, acute myeloid leukemia, and thyroid, testicular, peritoneal, lip and prostate cancer.”
I don’t need my car to park itself
I don’t need my car to park itself,
Nor fan or sprinklers to oscillate.
Not even with a code, direct from my phone,
While I’m self-driving alone in some other state.
With menus from my frig, I’m thru, thank you.
And please spare my screens rumors of sad news.
While to counteract your tracking my every move,
I don’t need an app by millions approved.
Did business, once upon, leave people in peace?
(Were bumble bees of yore not tagged and monetized?)
To turn or not to turn the slings of options off . . .
(Were citations of Hamlet not even quantified?)
While tech’s burning the planet with unpleasantness,
Might my fan try its best to me refresh?
